Regarding Firefox 12.0:
How does one disable the new search page when you open a new tab?
Or when you go to a dead link on a particular website a new webpage then displays after that saying something went wrong? It's a bit of a hassle when you click on the back button, because you're fighting with Mozilla as to returning to the page prior to the deadlink. I also want that to stop.

Never had these features in 11.0.

I have mine setup like this and never see the search page:

Options > General

When Firefox Starts = Show Blank Page
  Home page: about:blank

Haven't experienced the 2nd problem you mention.
