When I open Windows Mail and check for messages I get this message "An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop3.paradise.net.nz', Server: 'pop3.paradise.net.nz', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005"

I have googled the error number and the suggested fixes havent worked and I just cant seem to fix it.

The other weird thing is that none of the emails in my inbox folder come up...

So if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it... Please let me know.

I suggest you ditch Windows Mail (which is a crippled piece of crap) and install Thunderbird. I waited far too long before ditching Outlook Express but when the time came, Thunderbird imported all my messages and account settings without a hitch. It's a far, far better product than Windows Mail. Windows Live Mail on 7 is even worse because they've removed some of the functions OE had. Why oh why did you do that Microsoft?

Hi

Cam H: I have an Asus notebook running on Vista (unfortunately!).

Grant K: I have installed Mozilla Thunderbird on your advice, however when it comes to importing my Windows Mail address book and mail, it only brings up the following 3 options:
- Eudora
- Outlook
- Outlook Express

So I can't import anything from my Windows Mail system.

I can live with using Thunderbird from now on, I just can't live without retreiving some really important emails I had sitting in my Windows Mail inbox.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Mail is basically the same as Outlook Express, so it ought to work. Did you try selecting OE to see what happened?

I migrated from Windows Live Mail on 7 to Thunderbird without a hitch, however, if you still have no luck, here is what I would suggest:

1) Set up a Gmail account if you don't already have one.
2) Enable IMAP mode.
3) Go into Windows Mail and enable IMAP access to your Gmail account.
4) Drag all the folders you want to keep across to your Gmail Inbox where they should each appear in their own sub-folder.
5) Shut down Windows Mail, and go to Thunderbird, enable IMAP access to Gmail and drag all the folders back to local storage again.

I have migrated thousands of messages in this manner when I moved from Outlook 98 to OE, and it worked without a hitch, so there shouldn't be any difficulty using Thunderbird instead.

Post back here to let me know how it goes.

Yes I did try the OE option but I couldn't find Windows Mail when I got to the "Select Mail Directory" option??

I just tried your newest advice and I was doing fine until I got to your instruction number 4:

When I try and drag the folders I get a round black circle with a line through it which won't allow me to drag the folder from Windows Mail to my Gmail inbox. I have checked all the settings and everything appears to have been changed correctly.

Probably something simple I am doing wrong... please have patience with me

I might have remembered that bit slightly wrong because it was about 5 years ago since I did it...

Try this instead of my original step 4:

4a) Make a folder name in Gmail's Inbox to match each of the local folders you want to keep.
4b) Open the Local folder you want to copy so the individual messages are displayed in the right-hand pane.
4c) Highlight a block of messages from start to finish using the Shift key.
4d) Drag them across to the folder name you just created under Inbox and drop them there.

I just tested that with Thunderbird and it works, so it should be fine with Windows Mail.

Let me know how it goes.
