Hi, this is my first post, great website!

Does anyone know if the computers sold on TradeMe are any good, are they good value for money etc?

Does anyone have some good tips for buying off TradeMe, I was going to build my own PC but I decided that it would be a bit too difficult.

[Moderator edit (MF): removed link to auction that does not add to the topic]

trademe machines are predominantly private sellers, and not covered under the CGA (i.e. good luck getting warranty service).
some traders will be better value than others.

just price up the parts on local websites, and you will see if a particular machine pre built is good value...

I have removed the link to the auction, since the question is not specific to that model. In general buying a computer off someone at Trademe is not bad - however you have to make sure you are looking for something with warranty, original software, etc. In doubt, why not go to a store and buy from there?

I am saying this because you linked to a $5,200 auction of a computer running a 3.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 150 GB. You can get the same specs for much less than this.

You have two 400GB HDD. Is that what you want or just a mistake?

perhaps to run RAID (for performance, not redundancy)

I wouldn't go within a mile of the GeForce 8800 graphics card.

Because when you go out and buy a DirectX 10 card, well... You expect DirectX10 performace right? Nvidia have only released drivers for XP for which of course there is no DX10. For Vista there are no beta drivers at all.

Considering Nvidia have been releasing drivers for DX9 for Vista for over a year now and still haven't got them sorted, one has to wonder how long it will take them to get DX10 drivers out.

Also by all accounts the card is not a great performer. Never overly wise to get the first card of a new series,

At pp.co.nz you can get a custom PC built although I am a hardware noob and don't really know what components to choose. Can anyone tell me how to select the right components?

Yes thats a very nice system. Not too sure about the price, but it seems fair.

Maybe 4 x 512Mb would be better than 2 x 1Gb.

Cool thank you, why 4 x 512MB and not 2 x 1GB. Also what's the difference between buying two memory cards and a dual channel one?

$368 for a case and psu?!?!
and for something like $500-600 you can get a shiny dell 20" widescreen LCD.
I would go for 2x 1gig chips over 4x 512. This will leave you with further room to expand later on.
Personally I would go to www.pricespy.co.nz and get the parts and then put it together myself. Building a pc is actually far easier than people think
