I have a friend with a win XP computer running outlook 2010.
They are having trouble sending emails with attachments. When you click send/receive or reload outlook it tries to send emails on their @xtra.co.nz account although nothing is in the outbox.

Other people online have had similar problems but haven't been able to send any mail - the issue here was a stuck read receipt. So I installed outlookSpy and search around looking for a stuck email/reciept but couldn't find anything.

Pretty sure their is an email somewhere though. I assume the stuck email has an attachment as it is only these emails that get stuck sending, any ideas on what to try next?

I've had trouble with sending attachments via xtra too using outlook 2010 on windows 7, the emails just get stuck on the outbox. I think it is a problem at xtra or yahoo who they subcontract out to.

Possibly although I installed windows live mail and setup the same account and was able to send attachments which leads me to think it is outlook not an xtra/yahoo problem?

The did try to send an email with a 16mb attachment, possibly this is to large for xtra and now the email is stuck in limbo?

Drag it into the draft folder, open the email, send it again. That fixes it most of the time.

Xtra used to get upset with attachments larger than 5MB, but hopefully someone has realised how stupidly restrictive that is by now. It may be worth investigating what their current limit is though.

That is the problem, their is nothing in the outbox to delete/move? It keeps trying to send *something* but I have no idea what or where it is!

Mine was around 5MB. But maybe they have a smaller limit. But usually if they have a limit it will come up with some error.

Selecting "Show progress" from the "Send/receive" tab doesn't show anything useful?

Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+S, then go to Edit, and check there's nothing in there that you don't really need selected.

Hit Ctrl+6 to display the "hidden" folders and clear them out if need be. Ctrl+1 to turn them off again.

If it's really being difficult then it may be worth deleting the email profile, or at least the account in question and recreating it.

Nothing interesting in show progress. Haven't checked hidden folders so will try that.

I have tried creating a new profile but that didn't help, might try recreating the account.

You have a delivery confirmation recipt stuck in the outbound queue
( yes you are right outlook doesent show anything there but it is, trust me..)

Follow these instuctions to fix things

Note: Make sure you make a backup copy of the outlook pst file before you try this

I know it seems like a stuck read receipt but I don't think it is. I have tried both outlookSpy and the tool you suggested and I can't find anything. Usually if you have a stuck read receipt it prevents all mail from being sent but this is only mail with attachments.

I think it is probably something very similar to a stuck read receipt but I couldn't find anything in outlookSpy.

Could possibly be a corrupt PST file. Happens all the time.

Simplified instructions to create a new PST file and import the inbox and its subfolders back into a new one.

1) Close Outlook
2) Go into Control Panel > Mail
3) On the data files tab, create a new data file / PST file
4) Set it as the default file, and change the delivery locations for your accounts to the new pst
5) Open outlook
6) Right click on the old PST file with all your folders etc in it, and select close
7) File > Open > Import and then import the inbox and subfolders into the same folder in your new pst file.

Repeat step 7 for the calendar, contacts and notes folders. Dont import the outbox.

If the PST file is corrupt, you could try running ScanPST.exe (should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14 or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14) on the pst file and see if that helps.

Its probably sending those stupid deleted unread recipets.

I have had constant problems with outlook doing that when I delete an email on another device and its an imap account. In the end I gave up and moved to thunderbird. Its *&((*&ing ridiculous that there is no way to disable reciept generation completley in outlook for when something gets sent into your spam folder and you clear it out, or you delete _OR MOVE_ the email on another device.

A friend had this problem, I tracked it down to antivirus getting in the way. Disable antivirus for 15 minutes and see if it helps.
