Its decided to move 200+ gigs into the recycle on the server since my USB drive didnt come up after a reboot.

So anyway, now I am considering crashplan with all the free offpeak and VDSL upload, and the fact that the only reason I went with backflip was the unmetered slingshot since I got it at a time when there was no unlimited with them etc.

So, can someone with it confirm, if you have a drive backed up, and then it is off or whatever when a backup runs, that the files will remain on the server and it will get caught up again next time it runs with the drive connected?

Hmm... that's a good question.
I don't have any external USB HDD backing up to CrashPlan, so I can't really say for sure. I highly doubt it though. I only have internal Hard Drives backing up to CrashPlan.

I might even just try what you are asking and get back to you. I'm curious now.

It will remain on the server. It assigns an id to every USB device. If the device is not plugged it will ignore the files until the next time it sees the drive - in whichever port you plug it. It will only remove the files if you plug the device, it's recognised and the files are gone.

I know because I have a USB 3.0 drive here with my software and music - and not plugged all the time as I use a laptop and sometimes I am away from my desk.

Even so, it's a backup - it will restore deleted files anyway...

backflip insists on reuploading things when the drive is back, even tho I can see them in the restore part of the app and its smart enough to figure out it is the same file when I try to restore it.

I have the drives either mounted in folders or else have things junctioned into places on other drives to turn a hodepodge mess of externals into a somewhat logical directory tree, and so that when I move media (like my BBC folder just hit 1TB) I junction it so they still show as being in the same place in the heirachey to apps like plex media server, since it will otherwise re-index it and put things in the recently added list even tho they are old (and reset my has played icon too)

But backflip even fails when its backing up things in the root of a drive and its off, also when windows retarded USB support re-installs my card reader and gives it the drive letter that a 2TB drive should have then it also makes it throw a wobbly and move everything to the recycle bin with no one click way to get it back again.

Cant comment on Crashplan, but I am a very happy Backblaze customer. Highly recommend them.

I'm a big crashplan user. I have 148 Gb on their service and on two machines at home.

What you could do if you moved, was to sign up to their online system and slowly upload all your data.

But what you could do, is back up to a portable hard drive, and take it round to a mate place, get them to reattach your backup and you can use that as an initial seed of a backup. So until you get you proper online one done on the crashplan servers, you're covered at another location (your mates place) without your mate having to download all 200gb.

I would keep backflip till it was done on crashplan anyway. the really important stuff is still ok on backflip.

I concur with Mauricio.... Crashplan ignores offline devices until they are back up, when it will rescan, and just upload the changed files.

Been using Crashplan for about 4 months now and it has been flawless

Mauricio and Evilg are correct.
Crashplan just simply works. No problems with backups & restores. Offline sources & destinations are detected when available, otherwise ignored. Seeding & using a friend / family member as a remote location is a good alternative to the cloud. Different levels of password protection. All encrypted.

Best, all of that for free. Only pay when you store stuff in the cloud.

1.1MB/sec up to crashplan during snaps free overnight time. Has a scheduler in the backup app to allow it to only use that then, so no more route commands in task scheduler like I had to do to make backflip only go at the offpeak times.

Backflip was lucky to hit 2200kb/s in its app, and usage overnight reflected that. 14 gigs a night on crashplan. Much faster etc.

Once the desktop has all the critical stuff backed up I will install crashplan on the other computers since I can, and get them all backed up before starting to backup my flac collection that I have painstakingly tagged etc and would hate to lose.
