After searching, click the search tools button, then change the "The Web" dropdown to "Pages from New Zealand"

Apparently you can use the firefox version for older behaviour:

I always just append site:nz to the end of my search.

I would seem using the method above and the search tools option then pages from New Zealand, yields different results.

I use "site:nz" in my query, which restricts the results to .nz domains.

Using site:nz will exclude sites such as metservice.com and will therefore restrict results further than the "classic" NZ search.

Yep, but that's often what I want. NZ targeted sites with a .com URL are stupid and don't deserve my attention.

Really annoying.

The design change is more minimal, but less practical by far.

They have been doing quite a few annoying changes lately. One is with image search. At one stage parts of image search additional option were missing, but I see they now have the at the top of the page instead of down the side.
