Seems like a good deal, unsure if the AC adapter works in NZ though (why don't they publish this spec???)

On the box , it says input : 100-240v

The AC adapter wont have the pin configuration for our powerpoints, but most of these extenl HDD's use pretty standand 12v ( or 5v) adapters so more than likely you'll have a suitable one floating around.

But a good price, and hopefully we'll see some downward price pressure here in NZ

Good - I didn't check the photos. And pin adapters are cheap as chips.

If it's like all the other Seagate External drives I've seen it will have the different power pins included in the box.
They just clip and unclip from the main power adapter so you can use it easily while traveling to different countries.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

thanks for that, brought one (using the Amazon order page link).

Plan is to break it out of its case and use it as an internal drive (I note you could get either a 5900 or 7200rpm drive) but compared to local 4tb bare drives this is a bargain.

Don't know if the usb3 case interface is locked to the same manufacturer or size of drive. There are 4 leds to show how much of the drive is used, how it works out the capacity of the attached drive I am not sure. It might be that the leds do not show the correct amount if a smaller drive is connected or it may pick up the size from the drive itself.

Apparently there is no power management features available with the drive, but, at least it defaults to always on instead of 7 / 10 / 30 second spin down times.

I've heard that the new drives in the enclosed don't have the same as they used to. E.G they don't have IDE ort SATA connectors inside. Its something else. SO I would be very careful before opening one to check this if I was you :)

Interested to know if you can open it easily. It would be good to replace a couple of drives in the NAS here...

yeah, I've seen some of the 2.5" Seagate usb drives where the drive has an integrated usb interface rather than a sata interface with a sata / usb adapter.

I've looked at reviews where people have said they have done this with this model and there are youtube videos of people doing this of this (which are blocked from this location so I haven't seen).
Based on that I'm expecting this will have a std sata interface with a adapter board. Even if it doesn't, usb3 will be fast enough.

I think it's about to sell out they now  say "Check out fast before we run out.", so, if you wait for an answer to that question it may be too late to do anything about it.

There are YouTube videos of people opening these I believe (but haven't watched).

Check out the 5th page from this link, it shows the sata adapter. They did say that there were other adapters available (thuderbolt etc) which I thought would be a usb3 to thunderbolt adapter, but, it looks like you replace the whole adapter with the output you want. Based on that, it may be possible to plug the power / sata plugs (depending on their thickness) through the gap the the official interface uses.

Actually, check out all of the pictures from that link. You can use just the base as a usb3 / sata dock as well :-)
