After having a few problems with my computer re gaming, I am looking at doing an upgrade on the Memory, CPU and Motherboard.

Choice 1 is:

AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz Socket AM3+
Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0 Motherboard or Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 Motherboard
A-Data XPG 2x4GB DDR3-1866

Choice 2 is:
Intel Core i3-3220 3.3 GHz
A-Data XPG Gaming Series, 1x4GB, DDR3-1600
Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H Motherboard, Socket 1155

The Intel being only 2 cores and the AMD 6 cores.

Would be used for games such as Sim City and Anno 2070 and Netflix, Hulu etc.

Well I prefer AMD but many many say Intel. Really personal preference. The Intel will be better for some games and AMD for others. Overall Intel will beat AMD. BUT most people honestly wont notice the difference.
At this time AMD having 6 cores against the 2 of the Intel doesnt even matter as most games wont take advantage of them.

Really comes down to your preference and budget

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Why the i3? Stretch for an i5, much better performance I think. Intel generally kicks AMD, but AMD tends to be better value if you don't need super performance, but look at benchmarks for the games you're after.

Stretch for an i5 - you will not regret it

As above if you are after any kind of performance go Intel, if you wont really be gaming AMD will be cheaper

I have had no end of problems with USB on the last 2 amd machines (AM2 and AM3) so wont touch them till they get the next revisions of stuff out.

Intel USB controllers seem to be just better all round. Machine doesnt grind to a virtual standstill like the AMD does with several USB copy operations happening at once.

if you want to use onboard graphics then AMD > Intel

What video card do you have?

Currently a GeForce GT 620 but that will be changed in the near future.

It's pretty straightforward. Except for a short number of years, where AMD had decent performance the only reason to buy AMD is if your budget won't allow for Intel.

I went with AMD, I only really need it for 3 games. The rest are played on Wii U, PS3 or Xbox 360. AMD was my choice due to budget, especially seeing as I am also doing renovations.

Personally I wouldn't be stressing about the CPU except for getting a good benchmark score.

I'd be investing any extra cash in making sure my storage performance was quick.

Getting a great SSD is going to give you more performance than an i7 over an i5

Fair enough too; while I would generally recommend Intel these days (except for APUs) I still have a real soft spot for AMD. I don't think you'll be disappointed so let us know how it goes.

PC built - Haven't suffered any reboots. Temps are way down to 25c under load. Running very well.
