After 8 years of service my old Dell 2407WFP 'popped' Friday night, resulting in a dead Belkin PDU and a monitor that won't power on. Also resulted in power to my whole apartment dropping, with it tripping the main and wall plug specific fuses. Really hoping my pc isn't cooked in any way, but need to buy a new monitor before I can be sure.

Guessing a repair is not really viable given the monitors age, so looking to replace. Quick read and found the Dell U2713H 27" on sale for $909: http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=nz&cs=nzbsd1&l=en&s=bsd&sku=210-41287&redirect=1

Looks to be about right for me; I spend more time working (Office, web apps) than gaming but play a bit every now and then.

Any other likely candidates before I make the purchase?

Can't go wrong with anything in the Dell Ultrasharp range, they always review well online.

I normally treat TFT Central as gospel, well worth a read, they also normally acknowledge any other monitors in a similar price range that might be worth considering.

I looked at the Dell, but ended up buying the equivalent HP for about $100 more because I liked the way it was put together, the placement of the USB ports, and the very effective matte screen, which suppresses any glare:

In the 5 months since buying it, I've been really pleased with how it goes and would buy the same again.

Check PB tech for the ex lease monitors. When I was getting my 20" square screen ones there were some 24 wide ones available for a little over $100. Those old dells are very very nice monitors even compared to some of the mid range current gen "LED" junk.

Thanks for the help guys.

Checked out the HP and while it looks good, I'm quite keen on USB 3.0 and it is a bit more expensive than the Dell.

Also had a look at PB Tech. Never realized that section existed! Nothing suitable there atm however.
