I thought I'd revive barf's thread with desktop screenshots. Except this time, there's a new ship and crew. And the captain is awesome.
Barf's thread was http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=46&TopicId=8106

I have to say Beryl looks impressive, right down to the Aero knockoff

Whaaaaaaaat??

But yeah that window theme of mine - I tried to rip of Aero kinda sorta. I like the way the buttons are. I found a theme which was kinda like Aero but I altered it to look more Windows-ish. I don't like how there's a smudge around the window-title text in Aero, so I made the title bar more opaque.

Anyway bring on the screenshots!!

(ps bradstewart is wrong and weblord pepe is right at everything)

Pffft I was referring to barf's aero knockoff. Not loving linux at the moment.

it would be a knock-off if it did the same things as Aero but, beryl can't really be compared to Aero because its a 3d desktop and Aero is just an alt-tab enhancement. anyway I just like the look of the Vista widgets.

Nope Aero is not just the Alt-Tab enhancement. It is a fully GPU rendered desktop. The gadgets do look nice, but I don't really have a use for them. Lots of people seem to like the Sidebar, but I'm not too sure about it.

They tried the sidebar with Windows 98, remember?

The channels bar it was called. It had icons for ESPN or CNN or whatever. Basically advertising. It was rubbish and slowed the computer to a grinding hault. It was part of 'Active Desktop'. As I recall there were various utilities (including 98lite) which specialised in removing Active Desktop.

But anyways yeah Aero is a fully GPU powered GUI. What annoys me is the requirements to run it. As far as the requirements to draw graphics on the screen like Aero...well...I got an old Geforce 4 MX graphics card which can play games which are more spazzy than Aero.

Aero should stick to making chocolate bars.

..mm.
