I am hoping to upgrade my graphics card to play some games on higher settings. However I am unsure if my current system can work with upgrades.

MoBo: Asus P5E-V HDMI
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8400 3.0GHz
RAM: 8GB
PSU: 600W
GPU: NVidea GeForce 9600 GT

What's the maximum Video Card I can upgrade to? For the MoBo and CPU - PSU upgrade is not as much of an issue, but I'd rather keep it cos it's new.

Advice on how to research this would be appreciated

Have a read of this article: http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Can-A-New-GPU-Rejuvenate-A-Five-Year-Old-Gaming-Rig-/?page=1

Your CPU will still cause a bottleneck in some places, but a decent new GPU will help lots. The example GPU is a 660, which will run you $3-400, and provided noticeable upgrades for a similar era system (albeit a quad core cpu not your duo)
