Anyone? Dell uses proprietory motherboards which are made by external manufacturers, but I am trying to work out what the technical specs of the board are to determine whether I can upgrade from Pentium D 2.8GHz to a Core 2 Duo CPU. The only model number I have been able to determine is 0WG864, which is presumably a Dell model number (and like Dell is no help!). Not sure whether made by Intel or Foxconn, but anyone have any ideas on how to identify the model/manufacturer of the board?

go to Dell's site and use their Support site.... and since you have not thought of doing that for whatever reason... here's a link for you.

Just type in the product serial number or model id.

In the future, try the manufacturer's site first, and hunt around.

Thanks for the sarcasm - have tried that and done that... I am not stupid and I do know the rules. I have also googled, check web forums etc so its not like I am asking a completely uninformed stupid question.

I want to be clear of the motherboard model in order to carefully check all the specs of the board, the info on Dell support is generic for this model of PC - it is not clear that the motherboards in ALL of these E520s are the same specs - they are generally similar, but I need to be clear of the one in mine, hence the request for any info other might have on the range of boards in this model of PC.

Guys, guys... I think chiefie didn't get the idea that you wanted some very specific information (I didn't) and gave his advice for this situations. Believe me, a lot of people ask things without even thinking of going to the manufacturers' websites.

As for your specific question, would a program lik CPUZ provide more information you could use?

Yes sorry guys. I did use that and it only comes up with the code that is presumably a Dell internal code which doesnt shed any light on the matter (that I provided in the first post)

When I google that Dell Motherboard code many of the links tend to suggest it runs an Intel P965 or G965 chipset. In theory then it should support the Core 2 Duo CPUs. However, a BIOS update *may* be required as well if such a thing is available for the Dell. This is just a theory as Ive had a few experiences with Dells - most have been unpleasurable.
On a non-propriatory (sp?) motherboard with the above chipsets, it would take a Core 2 Duo.

erm if this thread's still alive, checked on dell website they're now offering dual core on their e520s. does that help?
