Hi There!

Anyone here do business banking with ANZ who finds their recently "upgraded" platform which appears largely based around Java to be painfully slow to load? Things like printing reports can take 30s+ to just load the java pages ?

Just wondering if it's me or everyone.

Is that the ANZ Direct? If so yes, it's Java based, and yes it's a pile of poo. Super fussy about Java versions and PDF reader settings. We have 2 people here at work that pretty much spend all day in it.

Why would a bank develop a Java-based web application knowing all too well the number of vulnerabilities on this platform just increases?

It's something they inherited from National Bank, it wasn't that many years ago it was based on dial up still. (Direct Link) And their sale and purchase stuff for housing is still done via fax...I hate banks.

Perhaps you should consider switching bank, ASB and KiwiBank have great online platforms.

ANZ bought National a few years back. It wasn't always theirs.

Yeah not real easy for a mid size firm with many different owners/trust accounts.

IIRC when the ANZ/Nat Bank properly merged last year or so they went to Nat Bank's IT systems.

Unless you absolutely need to have Java (or any software) installed on your computer, better not or you always risk increasing the attack surface. I have happily lived without Java installed in my machines for years now.

I have one of my business customers who rings me regularly about issues with ANZ java - the ANZ help desk answer last time was to downgrade to an arguably less secure version..... Don't worry about it ANZ it's only banking what could go wrong???

its interesting now that 3rd party programs are checking on Java and disable it if its a known vulnerable version. Like firefox.

I was looking at a computer recently, java was disabled by firefox. so went to the website and get the latest version. Firefox still disabled the latest version. I didn't have time to poke around, maybe I did something wrong?, but i thought it was humorous... "Even the latest version is bad & we'll disable it"
