I have been asked to buy my wife a new large monitor for her office desk top computer. She has seen a 27 inch Samsung for about $450. However cost is not the main thing. We want to buy it from a shop in Christchurch, not import over the internet. Also quality is of utmost importance. She will be looking at it eight to nine hours a day. It will be used for text most of the time with some diagrams and pictures. When reading reports, up to three or four A4 pages could be displayed at once. With ok but not the best eyesight, good definition and clarity is top priority.
What sort of spec should I be armed with when I go looking and also any particular brand ?   Also any recommended specialty shops I could go to with knowledgeable staff.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thankyou.

SAMSUNG are very reliable. All my monitors have been SAMSUNG and they are all still going strong, even though I don't own them. The Dell Ultrasharp range and some AOC models have proven reliable.

Most monitors in that range (if not all) will suit fine for reading text...ect. You only really need to worry when watching movies or playing games. I have heard that 27" monitors that are 1920X1080 suffer a bit when it comes to fine details. Not sure how true that is. If money is no object, go for a high resolution (ie: 2K plus) IPS panel. Otherwise a 27" SAMSUNG will do the trick. :)

I would recommend an IPS monitor. The Dell Ultrasharp is a great buy, but quite a bit more than your budget and you won't find it in a store.

At least go for 2560x1440.

Global PC: Viewsonic VP2770-LED $1199

However, best avoid 1080p at 27" as it just isn't great. Alternatively you can go for Apple Thunderbolt Display - if money really no objection.

for 27" you will really see a massive improvement with 2560x1440 resolution which I don't think you can buy from any shop in Christchurch for that kind of price (this may be wrong though). I'm typing this on my 27" PC bank monitor I got from Ebay like 1 year ago for $350USD.....

I highly recommend testing them in store before purchasing, some people cannot handle the WQHD resolution for long periods of time, and worse still some PCs/Laptops can't drive the resolution without decreasing the refresh rate

I'm talking about how the Dell XPS 13 cannot properly drive the Dell 2713hm, which btw is a very nice monitor indeed!

So far the only store in CHC that may stock a WQHD is GlobalPC..

Why specifically 27"? At $450, it'll be a 1080p monitor, so same resolution as most 24"s for example. Now, are you wanting to increase the size a bit for vision/readability issues (i.e. hard to see, so make it physically larger), or do you want higher resolution to have more screen real estate? If the latter, then yes you need to look at a WQHD like the Asus PB278Q, which while being one of the cheaper WQHD monitors around, is also very good.

Thankyou for all your replies. That is all good advice. I will start at Global PC to see what they have. I said my wife saw a screen for $450 but that was not a budget figure. We will meekly pay what it costs to get what she is happy with. Will start shopping for it tomorrow and advise outcome.

The Apple 27" Monitor is very nice, but very expensive.

I like the Dells, we have the smaller ones at work, and they are very nice for looking at all day.

A Trade Me search for '27" monitor 1440' returns some results that would be good for you, and can also get them direct from Korea on Australian ebay.

Read these discussions to get more knowledge on the pros and cons of generic Korean brand vs. Dell - most of the 27" panels are made in the factories.

Will the Apple brand screen work on  a standard windows based PC ? Any compatibility problems. I know architects, designers love them but I did not think of Apple brand because of our operating system.

I can only reinforce what has already been said.

If you want 27" then you should really be looking at 2560x1440 resolution - keep away from the 1920x1080 at a 27" size.

If you are only looking for the 1920x1080 resolution then save yourself some money and get a 24" monitor.

I know you have said that you want o buy from bricks and morter, and preferably locally, rather than online but be aware you will pay a (potentially massive) premium to do so.  I would be interested in your reasons for rejecting an online purchase off the bat.

I recently went through the process of buying a 27" monitor 2560x1440 resolution and the Korean models available won hands down.  I went for a Crossover 270Q and it has been awesome.  I actually bought from a NZ trader providing a local warranty rather than importing myself.

It really is worth considering the Korean models for $$$ value.

+1 for this - I have one hooked up to my 27" iMac as a second display now and before that it was my main display on a Mac Pro. It's about 12 months old and never missed a beat. Also not glossy if that matters.
