Hey guys, a friend of mine has a desktop PC which now sometimes suddenly shuts off at random intervals without warning. It is running Windows 7 and is pretty new. When it does happen, the screen goes black and the PC turns off completely. I have checked some basic things but because the friend is in China, I cannot do a more thorough investigation. So was just wondering if anyone here may have some guesses as to what may be wrong? The motherboard?

Thanks in Advance!

Power supply or overheating probably.

Overheating was also one of the first things I thought of except every time the PC turns off, the PC is pretty cool to touch with no loud noises coming from inside the box. The PC also sometimes randomly turns off first try even though it's been overnight since it was last "used".

Could be the power supply, what would I most likely be checking there?

Er, which part is cool to the touch? What have noises got to do with overheating? Perhaps there are blown caps on the motherboard. Does it have quality parts? Perhaps as john suggests, its just cheap junk.

The whole box is cool to the touch. And with the "noises" I was thinking maybe the fan was stuck.

Can't argue about quality parts as it is.. well built in China, but all I know is that it does have a quality processor - intel i5.

Surely it shouldn't just shut off without any warning? Hmm...

What brand is the power supply? If the answer is "came with the case" then that is your problem right there.

Not sure.. And the friend won't want to open the case until I go to China some time! Oh well, they're not that worried. They'll use their iPad instead. Thanks again guys.
