If an Australian consumer purchases Office 365 home (5 pcs) he/she pays $AU119 (http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/office365home/)

If a US citizen purchases the same product from Amazon they pay $US68.00 (http://www.amazon.com/Office-Home-Premium-Subscription-Card/dp/B009SPTUW2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397806522&sr=8-1&keywords=office+365)

If a New Zealander purchases said product locally they pay $NZ165 (http://office.microsoft.com/en-nz/office365home/)

To summarise, an annual subscription in Australia in NZ$ = $129, in the US in NZ$ = $79 and we have to pay $165 per year!!

Is there something wrong with my research, am I not comparing apples with apples because this is a VERY large difference

There are several versions of office 365, not all versions are available online by the looks.
The one PB has for $114 and the Amazon one you refer to is office 365 Home premium ( not available online in NZ, PB may have imported it ) has Word, excel, powerpoint, Outlook and onenote
The $165 version of office 365 home, has word, excel, powerpoint, outlook, onenote, publisher, access. ( US$99.99 )

As NZ is so small and the numbers we sell here Microsoft could not justify selling the online product significantly cheaper than their retail partners.
If NZ was 10 or 20 times it's population software and other products would be cheaper, we are just too small to get the best possible pricing.

So given the pricing as discussed, if one purchased from the US then what is the price of the ongoing annual subscription? I imagine that MS will detect the regional location of the user and subsequently invoice based upon that location or does a New Zealand subscriber continued to be invoiced in the currency that the product was purchased?

Does MS have an office in NZ? Do they advertise here? They need to cover their costs some how.

I got office for $10 through some work program, HUP (home user program for corporates with the right license), for $10. Win.

so from what I understand, the only reason I can't purchase the US one is because the site itself won't accept an address outside the states.

Not exactly fool-proof.

Had a bit of a chuckle at this....

They offer 16% off for the equivalent plan in the US.
