When you say you have uninstalled/reinstalled it - what did you uninstall reinstall?

As a quick fix I'd uninstall Java using the uninstaller then delete all remaining parts of it manually from the filesystem, registry, and path variable, and remove all java plugins from the browser. Then reboot a couple of times.

After that I'd go to the same nvidia website and download whatever version prompted.

But at the end of the day do you really need Java installed just to tell you what the latest driver version is?

I had a similar problem with firefox 29+ (30 being the worse) and flash player update. kept crashing the plugin.. solution was to roll back browser version to 27

so try a older firefox version.. you can have multiple versions on same pc as well using the profile switch
to separate the start up profiles.. comes in handy when want to test new browser and keep old one
with working settings

have you also tried

Disabling the Java Console .. as it often solved all the issues with firefox and java in the past as well
