I'm not really sure where to put this topic, but hopefully someone can answer my question, or point me in the right direction

Why is it when you are looking at a website that has a lot of links with thumbnails and you click on one of the links to view it - then it takes you to a totally different website..... so you have to click out of that website, click the link again.... then it takes you to a totally different website again.... this might go on for 20+ times before you click on the link and what you actually clicked on and wanted to see comes up... does anyone know why this is and is there anything I can download here to stop it happening??

if you click on a link on a website to see that link / site it should take you directly to whatever you clicked on - not to another site.... I find this very frustrating!

What website are you referring to? There might be a possibility you have malware, go to https://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download + run a scan to see what it picks up

Also install this: http://unchecky.com/ it is an excellent tool to prevent you from installing those "bundled offers" that often come with installers like Java.

Yep you probably have a virus or malware. Post an example page, which link you click, and where it takes you. My computer does exactly what I'd expect. I use Avast! Free antivirus which protects against malware too I think.

well I've got an apple Macbook and hve run malware bytes on it and i'm pretty sure there is no virus on it either

the site was a porno site to be honest, but it has happend on other sites too - you click on a link to see the footage that is depicted in the thumbnail and instead of being taken straight to that site with the footage you want to see it takes you to a similar porn site with similar clips, but not to the clip you clicked on.... as I said I have to close the site that comes up and re-click the link.... then it will take me to another similar website...etc... this can go on for 20+ times before I click on the link and the clip / footage I clicked on to see comes up....

I will run malware bytes again and download an antivirus - but getting advise from people on geekzone earlier this year they said I shouldn't need an antivirus for the macbook...

Common for sites e.g pron to be filled up with advertising and whole screen overlays that will redirect you even if its on a video play pause buttons.
Try adblock.

IMHO you should have virus protection, especially on sites like that. If you want a reliable website in that genre you probably need to become a member.

Put anti-malware software on everything! Preferably with some kind of heuristic capability. There are exploits for every single environment out there.

This is part of the most likely answer. Many times a "directory" of links in a specific category (pr0n as mentioned) have images that instead of linking to a gallery just link to another directory and so on and on. Eventually you might land in a gallery - they need to maintain the impression users will at some point get what they want.

They do this just to keep ad impressions going up.

It's not a pr0n thing only either. Lots of those sites with Top 10 lists do this - the (paid) links at the bottom provided by "networks" and sometimes labelled "Related sites" is just a bait to another directory page that is then one click away from the content you want.

All about getting more page impressions. I wouldn't call it "website problems" but "online media industry problems".

I agree. It's in the scripting - try hovering over the link and check out your status bar down the bottom. If its a million character long address then more than likely scripted to take you to a page with ads - or a totally different site. If it has a link with the site you are on then its probably ok.

Not a golden rule...but handy

I am very tempted to set up a JavaScript example of showing one link and actually linking to another. But can't be bothered. Sufficient to say, its not rocket science to make people believe a certain link is point somewhere it isn't.

No it isn't hard - but for every way around something there is a way around something. I think they were asking why rather than how....
