dickytim: This may sound silly but the Playstation moitors come up refurbished all the time for around $150.
I have one and it is a truly excellent 1080 monitor.
My other monitor is a 27 inch Samsung TV I got from trademe for $200 a few years ago, soon to be replaced by my 32 inch Sony when it is retired from lounge room duties.
sidefx: I think you might struggle to find something new and "good" over 24 inches for under $300. Second hand you might have more luck - I just got a second hand Shimian Achieva (27 inch 1440p) for well under $300. Very happy with it.
Sideface: Assuming that you want a resolution of 1920x1080:
You're spoiled for choice at 23"-24" (eg Asus), but once you get to 27" prices soar well above $300.
If you want higher resolution you need serious money.

1080p on monitors over 24inch is 'orrible, IMHO of course :p Depends how far you sit from it I guess, but it's not a TV and most people sit fairly close to their monitor, so even for 24 inch I prefer 1920x1200 and at 27 inch I really don't think I could live with under 1440p.

Agree +++
I use a 2560 x 1440 27" BenQ monitor, but it cost way more than $300, even heavily discounted in a New Year sale.
Dstarzero: ... I recently upgraded to the GTX 780 Ti. What's the cheapest monitor that I can get that would do the new graphics card justice?
This is a "how long is a piece of string?" question.
