Hi

I have a PC with two NIC's in it.  I'm looking for a software firewall program (FREE) which will allow me to protect
either both, or just one.

Is there any free firewall programs out there that will allow this?  Zonealarm will protect both, not just one.
Windows Firewall is.. well, limited.  I want to lock the 2nd NIC so only one specified IP address can connect to it.

Cheers,
ZollyMonsta

Windows specifically? If linux was ok, then the standard iptables can do this, gui tool I liked to use to make the fw scripts is called fwbuilder, makes the job a piece of drag and drop cake.

Windows XP or Windows Vista?

Windows Vista is much more flexible and you can create rules for inbound and outbound connections on different networks.

Whoops, guess I should give more info eh. :)

The PC is running windows xp home edition SP2.

Network cards are a CNet PRO fast internet card and an Allied Telesyn network card.
I don't wish to firewall/protect the Cnet card, but do wish to protect/firewall the Allied Telesyn card.

Someone mentioned VPN to me, but that would have to be at cable modem level wouldn't it?  Rather than at PC level.
The main aim is to have only one PC (external) that can talk to this network card on my local PC.

You don't need a firewall. You need a VPN. Try using Hamachi.

Oh, and you won't need a second NIC if running this...

Simply install in both computers, at home create a network, join it from the second computer and that's it - only those two can communicate on that "LAN".

I've just been playing around with windows firewall.

Turned it on for the 2nd NIC.
Turned off all the default exceptions
Created one exception, for one port and only allowed for a set IP address
Tried to connect to the port via a different external PC (different IP than that set). Connection failed.

Do you think this will be secure enough? Is there any way I can test this to see if there's any way that anyone can get in?

I've got windows firewall logging, but unsure how to read the logs. it looks like I'm still seeing activity on ports 53 and 80.

Cheers,
ZollyMonsta

I've just discovered a downside.  NIC #2 (the one firewalled) is now being used as the default for internet access..rather than NIC #1 (my internal network connected to my Linksys router).  Is there a way to set windows XP to use only NIC #1 for internet access (port 80) ?
