Hi guys I have acquired a 27 inch late 2011 iMac suspecting LCD problems ) , I am trying to connect it to my tv, via mini display port to hdmi cable , I am getting no signal at all on the tv. IMac boots up fine and does start up chime, the iMac currently has no hard drive in it , could this be the reason why it will not pick up signal? Does the iMac need a hdd with os loaded on in order to use the thunderbolt ports?

Haven't ever tried an external on an iMac but if it is the same as my Macbook Pro, the external display doesn't come on until the OS X login screen appears.

Apparently 2011 iMacs came with Thunderbolt ports, so your iMac may be older than you think...

From what I can read, the iMac has to actually boot up and detect the display so until you can boot it I am guessing you won't get far.

Looking it up, apparently a Thunderbolt port is a souped up version of the Mini DisplayPort so the cable should still work no matter what. Still need to be able to boot the mac though, methinks :(
