Hi,

I have promised to build a new PC desktop for a Vectorworks user who is frustrated using her existing machine.

She used the PC version of Vectorworks 2012 and some other graphic software.

I have built a few PC's some years ago and have the basic knowledge but need a hand with what the latest options are for the main components.

The budget is not an issue but don't want to over spend for her needs.

Can someone suggest a good match up for processor, motherboard and Graphics card?

CPU Ideally i7, but how many cores??
GPU needs minimum 2Gb, with multiple DVI's or HDMI

I plan to put a couple of SSD's in. Any suggestion on type?

What are the hardware requirements of the software? Design software such as that is very costly, so I would put a reasonable amount of money into it. Infact they maybe better to get it professional built with a SLA on it, so they don't have downtime if it has problems.

You'd be wanting to steer clear of nVida GeForce & ATI Radeon cards which are gaming focused and opt for a more suited nVidia Quadro or ATI FireGL.

Thanks for the guidance re the graphics cards.

The minimum recommended specs for the software are all mid range but I think the biggest impact will be a switch to SSD as they are very big files that get generated.

I use some pretty demand cad software, and the minimum specs are reasonably low, but it would struggle under those minimum specs. I run it on a i7, 16GB and using a SSD, and it runs fine, but even on that rendering is what takes the time.

Vectorworks explicitly recommend Geforce desktop series card over quadro's, radeons, or FireGL's

Vectorworks: GeForce series cards will provide good results when used with Vectorworks and are usually of less cost than the higher end Quadro cards. The majority of the cards that we use and test in-house are in the GeForce families and with this extensive amount of testing we are usually able to find, diagnose, and fix issues related to these cards in a timely manner. The GeForce series provide good performance and excellent feature support when used with Vectorworks.
