I have a faulty 23 inch cinema display,. It is a great screen, 1920x1200 res, and a great design. But it appears the backlight has failed. It powers up, so it isn't the power block, but the monitors light flashes, and the error message shows it is a backlight problem according to the apple website. Doing a flashlight test the LCD screen is working, it just isn't backlit. Is it worth getting a part to fix, or should I just sell it for parts? There isn't any info on the net  on actally repairing backlights, and I suspect it will be a very expensive repair at an authorised service centre, and probably not economical, especially as it is over 5 years old.

Couple of ideas. First link lists a replacement ccfl for $19.00

http://www.lcdparts.net/ccfldetail.aspx?ProductID=1600

then here is a repair guide for the 24" , it may be the same as the 23 ??

Thanks for those links. My version is the older non LED version, but it doesn't look like they did service manuals for them, as they are quite difficult to open up. I may just sell it for parts because it maybe too expensive to repair, as it looks like it maybe the CF tube invertor or the tubes themselves, and they are pretty pricey, unless I can find another one.

hey were very nice screens.  You would likely get very little when selling for parts.  I would encourage you to give it a go.

Certainly a nice idea, and a good hack for what is a top monitor, even compared to todays ones. Although I can't see anyone has done this sort of conversion to this particular type of monitor before. It maybe a bit in the too hard basket, and maybe throwing good money after bad, when it could go towards a new monitor.
