I have 2 Gigabyte H97n-wifi boards and 2 Intel Pentium G3258 processors. Dont know the bios revision and these boot up but wont post.  So last night I was searching forums to see if others had problems.  Was wondering if these have the original bios which doesnt support the g3258.
After reading through the forum my browser closed. I restarted and it closed again.   I ran malwarebytes and it showed all these pups etc.   I looked in Program files (x86) and there was coup mania, white offers, something keeper etc. About 9 all in total.   All had date and time of when I was browsing the forum.   I had adblocker installed and that had silently been removed as well.  After cleaning out, I started firefox and it had browser redirect to adult sex site.  Cleaned all that up and Windows defender, Spybot ( i downloaded to double check) Malware bytes all showed system clean. I ran online Housecall and it shows clean.

I run Windows 8.1 64 bit with all updates and have MalwareBytes and just built in Windows Defender and in Firefox adblocker (which I know site managers hate) to try and prevent this happening.

So do I need a paid version of an antimalware/ antivirus to pick these intrusions up as happening since neither Windows Defender nor free version of Malwarebytes prevented this happening.

CNET download.com is full of adware itself. I NEVER download anything from them.

I run Microsoft EMET 5.2 to prevent exploits by programs loaded from browsers, Norton 360 for viruses and MalwareBytes Pro for adware/spyware.

Thanks. I thought I was protected and was surprised this happened without me noticing it going on.    Adwcleaner looks okay but yeah wary about cnet. Will check it and emet out.

Malware Bytes can be used as a scanner (free) or real-time protection (Pro). Pay for the Pro and keep it running all the time.

ESET is pretty good as AV as well (have been using ESET or Norton for years, switching between them to see how they are improving).

johnr: check out adwcleaner on CNET Download.com

worst..advice..ever..
:-)

One of the best defenses is common sense (honestly) .
Ive seen malware & viruses get  past every common AV program

I'll go out on a limb & say if you are carefull & suspicious, you wont get infected. Thats why its the some NEVER get infected & others get re-infected over & over again. Ive previously run my home PC with no active AV & had no issues for years (not recommended) . I just use Avast at home, not perfect, good enough.
Also avoid loading up the PC with freeware , thats where alot of malware (pups) can come from
Be careful where you download from. DO NOT download from CNET

Malwarebytes is very good at detection/cleanup. The free version is cleanup only, not prevention. For payware AV : NOD32 is very good(not perfect) and definitely getting better over the years
Not matter what AV you use, none have 100% detection rate.

Also check your modem/routers DNS setting, change its default pass & disable WAN side access, they can be hacked .

This has always been my thinking as well until now.  This all happened while browsing a computer forum and nothing seemed suspicious and never clicked on anything.  Could understand if I had clicked on something to cause it
