Hi can someone explain how HDMI audio out of graphics card works on a desktop.

Say if i bought a core2duo desktop. And i put in a cheap graphics card for 1080p. (*ATI vs NVIDIA??)

WIll i get HDMI 5.1 audio just like that? Or does it need another cable to connect?

If the graphics card supports it, you should see the HDMI out as an audio device in Windows which you can select.

I've got a C2D Dell 755 with ATi HD4550 graphics card and can confirm it outputs audio over HDMI. I have not tested multi channel but definitely works in stereo. No additional cables etc, just card in PCie slot

Basically the graphics card has a rudimentary sound card built into it, and it uses that rather than any other sound card in the system. If you have a stand alone soundcard like a Xonar or something, be aware it will not be using that.

for audio via HDMI
On old vid cards it may not work (I had to replace mine with a newer card)

New vid cards, it shouldnt be an issue ...as long as the vid card has a HDMI connector, Im not sure if it will work
through an adaptor

Getting surround/5.1 to work through it is another story :-)
