Hey guys,
I opened Youtube today and saw this come up in Chrome:

That seems really dubious. Why would it want to use my microphone? Sit there and secretly record what I say?

I got the same thing.  New interactivity in advertising to promote customer engagement it seems.

Isn't doubleclick owned by Google, same with youtube? Would I trust it enough to agree to allow it to access my mic..no. I don't have mic connected so haven't seen that message.

No. Surely it's Listening to you.

Tailoring your ad-stream to what you've been talking about.......

But it's ok as long as its not our government listening

You brought up a good point,

Our government might look at what we do and all. Which everyone is against.
But advertising sites and blah blah have been doing it for 10 years and still are and people dont give a stuff.

Thats right, i use adblock.

warning..tinfoil hat stuff

so doubleclick is owned by google.....
searching in goggle for "ad.doubleclick would like to use microphone on computer" brings up nothing usefull

search via another engine & we get all sorts of info.
So google is blocking info about this ??

google: nothing about it
duckduckgo : plenty of relevant hits

You know those new advertising stands at Westfield?  (If you don't have them, you will soon.  They're rolling out across Australia like a storm front).  They are an interesting piece of tech.  They have a camera at the top, and facial recognition technology designed to track which ads you personally see and notice.  Yes, they track eye movements to see if you actually look at the ad.  "Project Jonah" they call it - presumably a reference to Jonah and the whale, where Jonah is the money and Westfield is the whale.

Interesting concept for data analytics but just because someone sees an ad (impression) it does not necessarily translate to a sale. If you are a Holden owner and saw an interesting ad for Ford, it doesn't mean much.
