Just been around all computer shops I can find in Tauranga and Papamoa to buy internal Blu Ray drive.  One advertised having them but when I queried they said no they dont stock anything and their website just lists what they can get.  No one carries Blu ray drive and some places wont carry any stock and they say 3 to 5 days to get it in.  They wonder why we use internet to buy parts.

One place a woman had old Compaq laptop and couldnt help overhearing them tell her it will need service and new antivirus so minimum cost will be $375.  Youch!!!.

why carry stock when you can get it from a supplier in a day?

Internal Blu Ray drives aren't really all that common an item anyway I wouldn't think.

I never buy IT gear from specialist IT shops in the tauranga area despite living here.

Prices are too high, selection too limited.

I think they must make their money from people like the lady you describe, and commercial services.

they cant get it in a day. They said 3 to 5 days. May as well get it from Playtech or PB Tech or Computer Lounge myself for that length of time.

Tauranga Computers, Papamoa PC, Millenium Technology, The Technology Center, Circuit City (no retail presence anymore), The Computer Medic.
Most only keep limited stock. Would have expected at least one of them to hold a Blu-Ray drive.

3-5 days to get from their supplier might have been under-promising to try to over-deliver, as it would normally be overnight.

Also servicing the cooling system of a laptop can be quite an intensive job, often the cooling system requires EVERYTHING else to be removed (motherboard included), then reinstalled. Cant see it costing much less than $200, unless you're doing it for fun (and its not much fun, hoping everything goes back in and works perfectly the 1st time, otherwise you might be pulling it apart AGAIN)

pfft, fixing stuff takes time. Hardware replacement cost money.

It costs as much to repair my 22year old car as it does a new car . Costs me $500 minimum every time I take my car in for repairs (thats 1/2 of what its worth).
Just the way it is.......
Sometimes when something is old, you just have to tell the customer that repairs arnt economicly viable. Id guess thats what they were hinting at with
her old laptop. It could have needed new batt, new Hard Drive, more ram , component level motherboard repairs,  Windows reload etc etc etc .

Some want to repair regardless, some will write off 3year old laptops rather than pay for hard drive replacements or Windows reloads.

As for BluRay (and DVD) drives, they are going the way of the floppy drive. Ive never sold or installed one, ever, so no wonder PC repairers wont stock them.
Dont waste your money on one, BR is dying out (yes) . Some new content wont be realeased on BR, its more just streamed in the US instead.

Backing up existing BluRay's is worth it if you care about quality... streaming isn't the be-all-end-all at this point.
