I have been lent this for the weekend to watch movies that are on it. When I connect to my PC I have to go to device manager to find it. This says the device is working properly. But I cannot view files. The driver is up to date. It says I have no access to the device. I spoke to my friend (who knows even less than I about tech things). He says he just downloads from his PC and then plugs it into his TV and watches movies. He says he has not set up a password and I am not given an opportunity to use one anyway. The Samsung TV and DVD players don't recognise it either. Is there anything I can do this weekend? Help please and thank you.

Are you plugging it into a front USB by any chance ? Seen external drives do all sorts of fun things when they arent getting enough power from front USB sockets....

Maybe it has certain permisssions set  , i think sometimes the default users pc is set as total usage and other people get less access unless the owner sets it as open to everyone.Right click on the hard drive and check permissions under the securty tab

Also try go to Disk Management (use search)

It probably doesn't have a drive letter associated with it.

If you see it in Disk Management, right click and 'change drive letter and paths'

Assign a drive letter

It is drive Q. When I look at the security tab it says You do not have permission to view this objects security settings. Try taking ownership. In the space for current owner it says, unable to display current owner.
