Hey guys

Issue - when restarting, I'm getting BSOD with 0x000000AE 0xFFFA800AA03650 error.

Yet when I shut down and start up - no issues at all.

TBH, I've had a restart issue for quite a few months now - but all it would do would freeze at the Windows logo, and I would have to force shutdown and start up again (and then go through the whole "Repair" or "Start Normally" palava.
The strongest lead I have is that is something to do with the Catalyst Drivers for my R7 260x video card.

Today, though it's escalated to BSOD after the Windows Logo. But same - if I force shut down and start up, I can choose Start Windows normally and everything is fine (although I do get the message that Windows has an unexpected shutdown).

My setup:

GA-B85M-D3H mobo
G3258 CPU
R7 260x video card
Windows 7 Ultimate

Ok. I may have found the issue.

I have 8gb of RAM - half is AData and half is G-Skill (which I know is potentially risky).

So, I took the G-Skill out - it restarted with no issues. Yay, I thought, that was the issue.

However - I then put the G-Skill back in, and it again restarted with no issues.

My question now is - does having different brands of RAM create an issue that builds over time? Say in a week will it all of a sudden start having the restart issues again?

I bought the RAM around the same time I bought the video card, btw - thinking it was an issue with Catalyst may have been hiding the fact it was to do with the RAM.

Edit - change that again. After leaving the PC to run for a bit and doing some stuff, then restarting with both sets of RAM in place, BSOD.

So, clearly it's the RAM. Sorted!

2nd edit - dammit! It's doing BSOD when restarting with just the AData RAM now as well! But the error message is now 0xFFFFA80079A3060.

If I had any hair it would be getting severely tested now...

put them in the other way round?
and you checked that they go in the two slots recommended by mobo manufacturer if you have two ram cards?

Along with failty ram you can get issues with certain brands of ram being incompatable with certain motherboards. I had that issue myself a couple of years ago ram tested fine in another board but died in mine so changed brands the system is rock solid.

Have a look at the motherboard manufacturer's Web site for their recommended ram for your board . Question have you run the g skill by itself if not try.

And yes to your question on mixing ram, it's preferred to get the same sticks brand and model and even better at the same time same run that way they should have the same memory modules attached too.

If you suspect you video card do you have on board video try that, diagnostics involves a lot of slicing and dicing. If I have a problem child remove all the non essentials then test then add them test until it goes pop. Also don't forget the power supply these can cause weird issues when components don't get a smooth correct voltage supply.

Ok - appears likely it's my R7 260x video card causing the issue. Tried different RAM combos, still BSOD. Removed video card altogether - issue gone!!!

It is in to be "repaired" as of today.

I've had something similar for years

My PC (i7, 16GB, several different video cards over the years - Nvidia and Matrox) Bluescreens on restart or shutdown... NEVER ever bluescreens any other time.

It's had the same install for Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1 and now Windows 10. Each time has been an upgrade install and every OS has been ROCK SOLID except for this BSOD on shutdown/restart.

Super annoying that I can't power off my machine overnight conveniently (I have to go to another room, open a cupboard and hold the button down to turn off)

Sorry, just had to vent.
