I'm building a PC for a family member and it appears that the CPU is not compatible with the current motherboard BIOS. Its an Asrock N68-GS4 FX motherboard and AMD FX 6300 cpu. According to the website it requires bios v1.2 to use the AM3+ cpus - has anyone had this kind of issue before? Does this mean I need to buy an AM3 cpu JUST to update the bios?

Thoughts?

I did a quick Google/Duck-Duck-go and it seems like that CPU should be compatible with your motherboard.

I would give it a go... install CPU in motherboard and see if it runs. It probably will - even with an old BIOS version.

Make sure it is stable before trying any BIOS upgrades. i.e. run it for a while. I wouldn't assume it would run Windows very well at this point. If you have an old copy of DOS, or similar, then that would probably be best - or just mess round with the BIOS screens. If you can't get it stable then I wouldn't try and flash the BIOS.

if it runs OK, then definitely upgrade the BIOS. Also, after the upgrade, reset the BIOS parameters to factory stock... reboot. Don't feel tempted to start playing with any settings before you have done this.

Now the (possibly) bad news ... http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2394415/asrock-n68-amd-6300-bad-combination.html

It does seem like this guy didn't reset the BIOS parameters after the update and there is a fair bit of posturing in the various replies. I wouldn't take it as all accurate knowledge. But, worth knowing what you might be in for.

A few people did comment that that motherboard is less than ideal for that CPU.

Of course you can offset this with the fact that AsRock must have done some testing to create an updated BIOS for this CPU.

just try it you may find that it is running V1.2 already ....

in my experience if you install a am3+ cpu into a board that does not support it. It will not post at all (but that board had NO support for am3+)
