Hi guys,

I am in the market to buy a portable HD, 1TB will be enough for me. Prices seem to be around $100, give or take.

I was wondering what the difference was between the following HD's, and is it worth paying the extra $$?

I will be using it to hold Videos, Pictures, documents etc, just the normal stuff. I don't travel much/at all, so it would likely be kept at home.

Imation or WD or WD My Passport or Seagate for $78

Thanks

I have found over the years Seagates tend to fail more than other drives.

Yeah, I never use to touch anything but Seagate, but lately WD seems to be the more reliable brand. Ive still got a 160GB WD external unit thats about 8 years old now, still ticking along happily :)

The main thing is to get USB3.

I've used a 1TB and a 2TB Seagate for about a year with no problems (but intermittent light usage only)

Just dont move them when they ate running. The people I know who have the mose "unexplained" failures are always picking the drive and their laptop up and walking around, pushing it to the side so they can use their mouse etc.

I think the WD passport doesnt have sata on the internal drive, making it harder to recover data if things go wrong (I know its one of the WD's)
Otherwise, get one with the longest warranty.

On special for $88 at the moment:

But yea as already mentioned the drives don't have the standard SATA connectors on them so if something goes wrong with the USB interface you can't rip the drive out of the housing and connect it directly to a computer.
