I have been frustrated in the last few years with Google retuning results that do not match my search criteria for example using an AND statement but getting results that only include one of the words.

I learned today that if you click the search tools drop down and select Verbatim Google strictly adheres to your criteria.

I'm not sure if this is widely known - I've never read or heard any reference to it myself.

Google search can be really strong if you know how to use it. But while you're at it give

A whirl. Basically anonymised Google even with a proxy option. Quite nice.

I always use the SITE option if I want to only show sites from NZ that have the search content I want.  E.G. if I see something cool on a blog and I want to know if I can buy it in NZ I generally google it with "site:.nz" at the end of the term.

It used to be more useful when you could actually specify which country you wanted the results from with a check box - now it is less straightforward, but I am sure it is somehow 'improved'....

I search GZ via Google because the site search is so bad.
