Its been fine as the HDD attached to my WDTV Live. Last night it wont spin up. Power light is in, no spin. Data is not critical as its just video for playback, although I'd like to access it to double check.

Any experience here? Google tells me its often just the circuit board not the drive so I will whip it out. No, there hasn't been any clicks. Cant swap USB as it has a proprietary connector. I'll clean out some storage boxes to check a couple others I have in case there is another like USB and try another power adapter in case thats a small fail. Wet cold Sunday task, so interested in any that have been there done that.

Tried another power adapter on it? I had one that decided to change from a 12v adapter to a 7 volt adapter - lights worked but noone home on the drive

I would think it would be a standard connector, though possibly not one you personally have seen around.  Have a look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Host_and_device_interface_receptacles

Could be the external PSU as well.  Have you got another one with the same rating on another appliance you can try?  http://support.wdc.com/KnowledgeBase/answer.aspx?ID=1378  A number of GZ users will have spares - me included.

80% chance the HDD itself is fine and you could crack open the case and connect the SATA hard drive into a desktop computer, but of course trying new cables would be the first thing.

Thanks guys. I have another couple lying around somewhere (we moved recently) so I can try the PS. The USB is a Micro B Superspeed, fingers crossed the other two use that

Cool.  If you are any where west Auckland I can sort you another USB cable if you let me know in the next hour so I can take it home.  (Am just catching up on paperwork at the office while the weather is rubbish.)

I have a spare circuit board here if you want one, I bought some a while back and took the drives out because they were cheaper than buying a straight drive.

Even power supply if you need one.

Right now I have a 32GB USB stick in the WDTV, quite liking it actually. Turn it on and its there, rather than wait and wait and wait until the MyBook appeared.

The 32GB thumb drive isn't that great, it cant copy to and play from without buffering. Now I can't copy a file, it stops at 4.29GB, and its NTFS Im sure. Plugged in one of the Adata 1TB UDB3, it wont fire u fully as I guess the WDTV USB isn't powered enough. Grrr. Got the two old MyBooks out, but plugged in the failed one, and no power light. Ok, it is jiggered. Turned on WDTV and the power light flickers which was normal. Presto, its working. If its failed it wouldn't surely be intermittent. Maybe it got stuck in sleep?
