Hi, Im looking to build a comp which will be used for multimedia, programming and a bit of gaming.

Ive always used cheap generic ram in the past - should I be spending the extra $$ on top quality stuff?

its not really the brand that matters as long as it come with a warranty just in-case but as long as its the highest speed your mobo can handle then it should be ok, but its always better to fork out the extra for a name brand
