Current PC has lasted over 4 years but now with the Rift looking at upgrading, not interested in overclocking.

Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3
CPU INTEL CORE I5 2500K
RAM Kingston HyperX Blu KHX1333C9D3B1K2/8G, 2x4GB
GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 560

About two years ago upgraded the graphics card to a EVGA GTX 770.

The minimum spec for the Rift is CPU i5 4590 and a GPU of GTX 970.

I'm so far thinking the new Nvidia 1070 for the graphics card but unsure about CPU and or Motherboard.

Current motherboard is socket LGA1155 so do I upgrade just the CPU to something like i7 2700K or move to the latest socket LGA1150 and something like i5 6600K?

Or leave the CPU and motherboard as is and just go all out and get a 1080 card? I am starting to notice the CPU maxing out slowing things down so preferance is to upgrade the CPU at least. Also somewhat annoying the Rift software constantly reminds you if hardware isn't up to spec.

Would be nice to keep it under $1000 but can stretch to about $1200.

If you are going to upgrade, may as well get a decent upgrade. I'd get the i5-6600 but unless you want to overclock, paying the premium for K isn't worth while.

Thanks but that CPU seems very close in performance to what I currently have;

If you're looking at the GTX 1070, expect the price to be close to the $1000 mark if buying in New Zealand. Your chances of being able to keep it under $1000 will be difficult if you are looking at upgrading the cpu and m/b as well.

Right, but regardless, your CPU isn't compatible I'd suggest.

Keep CPU and motherboard; upgrade GFX card.

If you find the CPU is holding you back, you can always upgrade it after.  The i5-4590 is only very slightly faster than the CPU you have now...

Hmmm, was hoping the 1070 would be closer to $650 if going to be $380USD

Any particular reason you think that ? $380USD doesn't equate to $1000 even with GST, and margins.

Just from a comment in the thread by Scotty1986

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=50&topicid=195864&page_no=3

"Been told by computer lounge that the 1070 with be around $1099

The GTX1070 will likely be priced between $999.95 and $1099.95 in New Zealand.

Most GTX980Ti cards are already listed below cost, so it is unlikely that the price will be reduced further.
There may be the odd special, but you’ll have to keep an eye on our mailer.

Regards,"

and then this

Oh and I asked why we pay so much, got told this -

Hi Scott,

Everywhere in the world besides the US, the price of the GTX1080 is considerably more expensive. It all has to do with demand. The supplier’s in the US go through so much stock, that they are able to survive off a 1-2% margin.
Here in NZ we aren’t even moving 5% of what they are moving in the US. It’s a completely different market.

Regards,

I'm hoping that it is nowhere near that price as I would love to be able to upgrade to a 1070 from my 760 without needing to re-mortgage the house to do so :).

Amazon are selling at $699 for the 1070! That would give me much better reason to believe they could be $1100 here.

Fair enough, if that price is accurate then might just get 1070 for now, see how I go and maybe upgrade the CPU and/or motherboard later.

When do we expect the 1070 out in NZ?

I'd guess, end of June at the earliest.

In some benchmarks current generation CPUs aren't much faster than the 2500/2600K. In others, like video encoding, they're up to three times faster. I wonder if games really improve with the latest generation CPUs.

June 10th for "Worldwide" release date. This will be for the Founders Editions (i.e. the reference board) which will have a higher price than standard versions. Expect a few weeks after that for the standard versions to start trickling out.

Guess it depends on whether they are using new optimisations or features... mostly I would have thought games are largely pushing data from RAM into the Video card
