I have a whs 2011 machine which has been great. Just been given a used readynas 316 unit.  I had a terrible experience with a readynas 104.  Havent found many reviews on the readynas 316 and wondering if anyone has experience with the 316.  Is it reliable and okay for me to retire the windows home server and just use the Radynas 316 or just stay with the home server. Just hesitant as far as reliability after experience with the readynas 104

We have a 316 at work which has been going 24/7 for months. It isn't doing much, just being an ISCSI target, but it has been solid since the newest firmware updates. Seems like a pretty good little unit.

All that said, if you were buying a NAS, don't touch netgear with a ten foot pole, but for free, it is definitely worth a bash.

thank you for the reply.  I have some spare 2TB drives so may throw those in and see how it goes.

Check the disks are on the readyNAS Hardware compatibility list. If they are not, you may run into issues with them. This is one of my biggest bugbears with these readynas units. Disk not on HCL = no support. Obviously support isn't going to be an issue with an older second hand one, but we had a unit that rebooted every couple of days and changing disks to ones on the HCL fixed that. I have no idea why these units seem to be so picky about disks.

the drives are on the list and working well BUT the Bright blue front Ready nas light and circle came on this morning and wont turn off.   May give it a miss and stay with WHS 2011 or put open media vault on the WHS machine
