Hi all,
While I'm waiting for 2Degrees to answer their phone (grrr those wait times...), can anyone suggest any reasons why I'd only be getting around half the advertised speed on my fibre plan? I'm on a 100/20 unlimited plan but speedtest to the 2degrees server show I'm only getting 43Mbps down.

I called 2Degrees last week and they suggested I try replacing my ethernet cables with confirmed Cat6 cables. Did that today but still getting the same speed. Anything else I should check?

Maybe check that you are connecting to the router at full duplex from your ethernet?

We'll assume you're using a wired conneciton to your router as well? not wireless? I have a couple of those HG630B routers that spark give out. They restrict to 30mbps over the wireless channel.

Also any quality of service setting turned on on your router? this adds load and can slow the connection down also.

I had the same issue when I went UFB with 2 degrees. Speedtest was only giving me half speed on Download. Turned out to be the network card on my laptop. When I connected my daughters newer laptop by wire to the router Speedtest went straight to max 100 Mbps

@GeoffisPure - We've done some testing on our end and can see the modem is connecting at gigabit speed.

An iperf is getting up to 107 Mbits/sec.

Please check your connection with another wired device (ideally one that has a gigabit Ethernet port) as it appears the device is limiting at this stage.

Thanks 2Degrees - appreciate your support and the support rep I spoke to was very helpful. I've done some testing and determined the problem is not with 2Degrees or Chorus. (Mods can you please move this from the 2Degrees forum)

When I enabled my wireless card I'm getting the full speed 105Mb down. Just having a hard time figuring out what it is now.

The ethernet cable? I've tried a couple...
The computer? I've tried both my desktop and laptop...
The router? I've reset to factory settings....

IME drivers for network cards being the generic windows ones vs the ones from realtek will cause slownes.

Excessive software screwing with "internet security firewall privacy BS" will also cause problems, but I would expect that to cause wifi to be slow too.

Or its just a crap network card. What is it listed as in device manager?

My desktop's network card is a Killer e2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller

My laptop's is a realtek PCIe Family Controller

Both have the same problem. Have tried with 3 different ethernet cables too...

Are you using a Fritzbox 7390 or equivalent?

Check your hardwired ports are not set to green mode first.

But hen I moved from 2Degrees (30/10 plan) to another provider with 100/20 after a while I noticed the hard wired ports only getting 30Mb/s whereas the 5Ghz wireless was easily getting 100Mb/s.

Never figured out why, tried full resets and downgrading firmware, even did a reflash of the firmware that removed the snap customisation stuff to no avail.

I've since got a Huawei HG659 and it easily does 100Mb/s on hardwired and 5Ghz wireless.

Waiting for the 6.52 firmware for the Fritzbox 7390 to see if that makes any difference.

I had nothing but trouble with the killer nic on my gigabyte gaming motherboard and gave up and put a $10 realtek PCIe one in to get decent speeds out of it.

Not sure on the laptop, perhaps try the drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false if you are using the windows default ones.

Thanks for the help guys; I think what I'm going to do is take my laptop and cable to a friends house and check if the right speed can be achieved there. This will let me know if the laptop, cable or Fritzbox 7490 causing the problem. Have checked and green mode is off.

Good news - mystery solved.

Turns out one of the ethernet cables was causing the reduced speed, combined with the realtek card in my laptop. With a new cable plugged into my new PC I'm now getting the right speeds =] Thanks everyone here for the help - and to the 2Degrees helpdesk for tolerating me.

I'm not sure why the ethernet card in my laptop can't handle speeds above 50Mbps... all the settings seem ok.
