As posted on engadget.

https://www.engadget.com/2016/02/10/opera-1-2-billion-buyout-offer/

As a happy enough Opera user over the last 14yrs, I think I will be uninstalling Opera. Might make me sound racist but I dont trust Chinese companies.

I'd almost forgotten about Opera. I uninstalled it when it became a Chrome clone, and haven't really missed it.

Any remaining users would probably be better off with Firefox, Chrome (etc), or even Vivaldi.

I think this actually made it better.  There was a time for a while where the features that made it great were lost during the transition to the chrome engine but those returned and now I find it better than chrome, but with the added bonus of improvements in website displaying issues.  The new feature of pop-out video on sites is awesome, you can click it and the video will stay showing in the bottom corner of the screen even if you change screens or tabs.  Also how can you not support the original tabbed browser functionaltiy?  They have been first for lots of intuitive browser ideas, which are often copied onto the competing browsers.

I cant say I will uninstall it with the takeover, especially if they are retaining the Norwegian staff

They killed opera by releasing a really dumbed down version which meant a ,lot of people stopped using it. I think I will follow you and unistall it, as I am using an old verison . The old version still has the best bookmarking system, that you used to be able to sync it between PCs. But they killed this off.

use to love Opera, the speed dial was brilliant when they first released that.  but yeah, chrome came along, and Opera was forgotten.  Was a neat browser, but meh, no one even really tests against it anymore.

If you're referring to Opera 12  I found that I could no longer log into GZ .  I'm currently on Beta 39

Nope they just moved quickly to the chrome based version (couple years back) and it lost some of those great features for a while.  As I said above, all of the old features are back (including bookmark sync), plus new ones.

The one thing I do miss from the old Opera 12 is the ability to access the bookmarks  from an icon at the bottom left.. Vivaldi  still has it..

Yes that is what I was referring to and when they lost a lot of users. Maybe they have now increased the features again, but people have now moved on. Also the bookmarking is not the same, as wit fills the entire page, whereas opera 12 is is a side bar list. They also didn't make it easy to upgrade bookmarks from the new system, and then they killed off the old syncing site. People don't want to be mucked around like that. I did pay for my copy when they used to sell it.

Yep remember it well, it was a giant step backwards in terms of features when they did switch versions.  My understanding was they were having major issues with webviews despite being W3c compliant.  They were being negatively affected by some big player sites not working and so had to move quickly.  By this time Opera had been free for several years.  I was like you, pretty disheartened and went with firefox for a while before coming back when the good stuff returned (6ish months later).

I like it now more than ever, and BTW the bookmark part you are talking about is called the 'bookmark bar' and can be turned on.  I love the way the dashboard view with speedial (another opera first) has fast access to bookmarks, history extensions etc.  It is very intuitive.

From memory they were first to introduce tabs, speed dial, popup blocker, incognito, and I'm pretty sure they did the feature remembering what you had open and reopening.  Credit where credits due, suggest you give it another go because its still awesome. #operaFanBoy

Thanks I will give it another go. Is it possible to import bookmarks from opera 12 into it, and it keeps them in the folders? Last time I updated it lost all my bookmarks.

I am using V 38.0.2 on a couple of devices and it's OK. I tried Vivaldi and did not like it.
