I am out on site helping a local charity that is having an email problem.

They have a gmail account but it does not end in gmail.com, it has their own domain suffix.

They have one computer using Outlook 2010 to access the email, and another one that uses a web browser.

Last week they thought their email was being hacked so they changed the password. It wasnt being hacked by the way.

Now they cant access the email via Outlook (web is OK), even though they have updated the credentials in Outlook.

I have re-entered the credentials in Outlook several times now but it resolutely refuses to work.

What could we be missing?

EDIT : they are using POP. I know I could change to IMAP, but if all that has changed is the password why would POP stop working?

These are not people who adapt to change very well so would rather not do anything too drastic.

2FA security via txt or similar on?

It will need its own password to check email or be shown as an unknown source

No, no 2FA, when you login via browser it just needs the password and its done.

Been there, done that, banged head against wall. Good idea though.

Outlook has never played well with Gmail, authentication being one of the common problems. I have one computer that works and another that doesn't, and both are set up exactly the same. Suggest try Thunderbird or simply use the web portal.

Oh, that sounds too much like giving up!

It was working, has been working for years, surely just changing the password cant break it?!

Just had a similar issue.
Setting up Outlook (pop) with a existing gmail a/c.

Turns out , I had to go into Gmail & click the setting to allow less secure connections.
Gmail was blocking Outlooks pop3 access, as it deemed it insecure: there was a message about this in the gmail inbox (veiwed via webmail)

If the preceding doesn't work, consider Windows Live Mail. It is essentially a modernised version of Outlook Express and actually works pretty well with popmail. I like it better than Thunderbird, which confuses things with way too many unnecessary options. With a little patient guidance, your people shouldn't have too much trouble making the transition.

I have been using Gmail with our own Domain for quite a while now with outlook. Id suggest using google app sync for outlook. It saves having to configure IMAP/POP3 and it is very stable for us. 25 users and the only issue I get is when they forget there password. It asks for it every couple of months so it can re verify and update any changes to policy etc.

As above, I would say it's the allow less secure connections. And really it would be a good idea to swap them to IMAP.

Thanks guys, it was the "less secure connection" issue.

All sorted now and they could not be happier.
