I think I may have done a boo-boo.

I had a pc with Office 2007 Professional installed. Then I upgraded it with Office 2010 Standard as we wanted to upgrade all Office components except Access (which hopefully wont be required in 3-6 months time). Result, Access 2007 still worked, and Word, Excel etc ran as 2010 versions, all good or so I thought.

At the time the 2010 install did not ask for the product key.

Now the pc is asking for 2010 to be activated. When I enter the key for 2010 Std it says the key is invalid.

Is this because it wants a 2010 Pro key because of the presence of Access 2007?

Is there a way around this or do I need to splurge on a Professional key?

What would happen if I uninstall 2010Std? All components would revert back to 2007?

I believe the 2 run as separate installs and you would be legally entitled to run both products on the device so I wouldn't expect that to be the issue.

Perhaps it did ask for it and you just don't remember making it now invalid?

You can definitely run them side by side. The licenses are independent of each other.

Where are you prompted for the activation? Is it a standalone window? Or a prompt inside of the MS Office app, e.g. a yellow bar at the top underneath the ribbon?

  • IIRC, the product key for MSO 2007 can only be entered via the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet.
  • For MSO 2010, you can insert the key while the application is launched and you go to the About section.

Are you sure that you installed MSO 2010 Standard? Is that what you can see under Add/Remove Programs?

No unfortunately not. You would have no Word 2010 or 2007, no Excel 2010 or 2007; etc. Only Access 2007. You would need to re-install MSO 2007 to re-add the missing applications.

Thanks guys, problem all sorted. Just entered the code and it all worked as expected. Not sure why it wouldn't do it yesterday.

Possibly a mis-transcribed key as this morning I did a copy and paste directly from the MS download site.

The 2007 non-Access apps have been upgraded to 2010, not installed side by side, they no longer exist.

For my future benefit, when the time comes that we no longer need Access, would it be best to let sleeping dogs lie, or try and uninstall it and hope the 2010 apps dont get affected?

If you don't care about the disc space then leave it as it is :)

Sorry, but I have to disagree. You will still need to patch the software & MS will soon enough not support it any more. Rather remove it. You'll be safer, you'll save on bandwidth for patches & save on disk space. You'll also avoid any phishing attack that makes use of MS Access.
