Hopefully correct forum !!!

here it goes...

i have a file (basically images) in a flash drive .zip file. but when i try to unzip it, i get an error:

i googled around for solutions, and tried doing through terminal, but no luck:

related info:

- i use a mac OS yosemite desktop

- file size is 3 something gb

- If relevant, i also had a link sent by the other party to me, which showed same error.

- i do not use any software other than stock one to unzip

- Not just my computer, but same error on windows desktop. came up with the following error

Any suggestions ?

If memory serves correctly then the Zip format tops out at 2 GB and anything larger than this is non-standard. I think I've had luck with StuffIt Expander (available for free in the App Store).

Got a GUI program you can open the zip in to look at the contents and then try and extract bits at a time? I don't know if Winzip for Mac has a GUI, but there is a trial you could use to see if it works :)

This will not help you in your current predicament but I recommend you consider using the RAR file compression and archive format in the future.

The features of the RAR format are,

If a file in the RAR archive becomes corrupted you can still recover the other files.

If a RAR file download is interrupted you can still extract the files in the archive which were downloaded before the interruption.

There are file size compression and encryption benefits as well.

The question is who zipped it and what with?

There are many free zip utilities for osx. Some will handle all archive types.

Keka for example. Never used it, but it has excellent format support.

Seems like it is a multi-part zip archive or it is simply corrupt. You can try using 7zip to open it.

Edit: as another person on this thread recommended Keka is excellent.

I suggest you have the zip file creator test the file on their side and if that is OK, then to upload the file again. I believe the file was corrupt before the upload already or the person tried to upload the file while the zipping was still in progress. At 3GB, the upload process could also have failed quite easily, especially with IE.

Interesting, I wondered why that old format was still used. I mostly use 7z for my own compression.

update on this one..

I downloaded 7zip and tried with it.

waited until 5 minutes but the bar didnt even move. maybe wasnt doing it, didnt even gave me error.

Tried some other ones too in the mean time - The unarchiver, kinda worked

Came up with the following message midway

when i hit continue on it, it did the unzip for me.. not sure to full extend or not (havent had to word with the sender yet about actual file size)

Now the file size is 4.3 gb after unzip.
