I recommended to a friend that if they want to take their laptop to work (publicly accessible area) they should use a laptop security cable.

I've used these before, they work great. You mount a bracket to the wall where a stud is, loop the cable through and secure your device at the other end.

I'm sure we are all familiar with these things.

Friend bought this one from PBTech...

Turns out it does not come with the mounting bracket.

Does anyone know if you can get the brackets separately?

Mega/Bunnings/etc will certainly have a hasp or something suitable.

Wrap it around something close by (desk leg potentially)?

I presume that's what they are doing for now.

But the brackets I remember were tamper-proof.

I just cant see the point of selling the cables without the brackets.

Have made them with a cheap hasp and staple in the past. Cut the hasp down and use it as the tamper proof cover over the staple.

You can use a complete high quality hasp and staple without cutting it down if you wish. The more expensive offerings tend to be more aesthetically pleasing.

So the staple just needs to be big enough to pass the cable through?

I'm not sure what your expectations are? However the model you posted is pretty standard and functions for its intended purpose.

e.g. You feed the cable through a desk cable port or around a sold leg (provided it can't be slid down) etc then feed the lock end through the cable loop and attach to your laptop.

There is no removing the lock/laptop without unlocking it breaking either one.

It's intended to be portable and carry around in your laptop bag with you so the cable itself can be removed (i.e. "stolen") if not attached to a laptop but would be practicably useless without a key - this is the only scenario I can think of where you'd possibly want an additional mounting bracket besides locations where you really can't wrap around something secure-ish.

Obviously none of which will stop a determined thief as the Kingston port itself is the limiting factor in it's strength (it wouldn't take too much force to rip out of the chassis) so no need to overly engineer the other links in the chain to dissuade the casual opportunist - for locations where you really have nothing to wrap around a simple tightly fitted eye bolt would do the trick in slowing them down relative to the security of your total system.

Yes, there a number sold without the safety staple. You'd generally buy with or without depending on your requirements. Sometimes requirements change and there are ways around this. Sometimes people just buy the wrong one (often due to not wanting to spend any more than the minimum, or not knowing there are options)

What your friend has bought is a "standard" security lock, I have never seen one come with a bracket. They are designed to be wrapped around something thats not removable and not require extra tools to use them. Just using one will deter most thieves because if they really want it they will take it.

If I was an employer I would not be happy with staff bolting things to walls without asking.

Maybe I'm just old school. Its a while since I had to buy one, but when I did they came with the anchor. Never occurred to me they might come without.

Anyhow, I have found a solution, so thanks everyone for contributing.
