I'm running a Win7 PC with SSD drives. About once a week on bootup I get the error "disk read error occurred press ctrl alt del to reboot".

This only started happening when I upgraded my OS drive to a new 512 GB SSD. However scandsk and system file checker show no problems with the drive. Has anyone else with SSD drives run into this?

We've had a pretty bad run with one manufacturer who should be reputable... about a 5% failure rate over 2 years.

Does your SSD manufacturer have any tools that can be downloaded and run to give the drive a health check?

All my drives are Samsung 850 pro series. I've downloaded the Samsung Magician utility but it says drive health "good".

Firmware update for the drive? BIOS update for the motherboard?

Bios update (probably not available) + brand new sata cable. Both easy and one step closer if it's not a fix first time.

IME, weird problems like this are often related to failing power.

I would try the system out with a fresh PSU.

If that did not work, I would try a change of video card.

It makes no obvious sense but dodgy power can cause issues like this and dodgy power most likely comes from a failing psu but can be an early sign that your graphics card is on the way out.

I'd take a disk image of the SSD, for a full (not quick) format, install W10, and see if it was better.

I have the same problem on my sons computer. I thought it was the motherboard, I've upgraded the bios, tried different sata cables, different sata ports. It goes away for a while, but then comes back and I have to reboot it 5ish times to get it past that screen.

My next step is to try a different SSD.

I would suggest pursue warranty claim if it is still warranty. Also might be worth trying different SATA port. Some motherboards have different SATA ports coming from different SATA controllers.

SSD used to have its fair share do problems 3 - 4 years ago. Strange SSD failures were common. Often it was not a complete failure of the SSD but some kind conflict between certain motherboard and SSD controller Chipset. This makes trouble shooting pretty difficult.

OCZ SSD at the time was renown for having strange problems. Worked perfectly on one computer but errors out on another. I would have hope time has fixed many of the SSD problems. Personally, one brand which I find have excellent reliability is Intel SSD.

My GPU is only 3 months old a GTX1070. PSU a Seasonic 660W about 2 yrs old.

This issue has escalated to every morning on bootup, either disk read fail or sometimes I don't even get the message, it automatically goes into the BIOS and can't see the OS disk which is really strange. Sometimes it freezes on the Windows logo screen... not sure if that's related to a new keyboard I bought lol. But in all cases a hard reset fixes it. Funnily enough if I power off and restart later in the day when its not so cold it doesn't fail.

The drive has the latest firmware, and the mobo (Asus Z-97A USB3.1, 2 years old) has the latest BIOS. I have a solid backup solution for all drives so am not worried about losing data, but yeah its still really odd. I might buy a new kilowatt PSU anyway as I plan to eventually go dual GPUs & will need the extra grunt.

Yeah this fixed it I think... I haven't had the issue in 2 weeks after changing SATA slot. That's kinda stupid that a slot is faulty... but not worth the hassle of changing the mobo over.

Do you happen to have one of the motherboards which have lots of SATA ports but feed off different controllers . It used to be quite common for manufacturers to add additional SATA ports by adding another third party controller on the board. And your problem could be a conflict between the SATA controller and the SSD rather than a bad port per se. Though one could argue a conflict could be seen as a bad port ...
