Have just made backup by copying and pasting windows libraries onto external hdd. Now would like to use backup feature so it only backups any new files in the libraries to the equivalent libraries on the external to save constantly finding what is new in each library and copying it over. Can this be done or do I have to start from scratch with the backup tool.

This isn't the ideal way to do it but you can use Microsoft SyncToy to keep the folders in sync manually or via schedule.

Plus one for SyncToy.

That's what I use.

Just remember to save on backup space and time during the back up on backup the stuff like photos and files you've created. Don't bother with OS's and applications etc. They can generally be easily re installed but stuff like photos and the files you've created not so.

Can also setup a robocopy script with task scheduler as well.

Not really a backup and not a protection against malware including ransomware. You can use Crashplan for free for loco backups which will have version in but still can be encrypted or deleted. Best to use it to backup to their servers.

Use CloudBerry backup free. It can back up 200GB using the free product, to disks or just about any cloud destination. It does incremental backups, which is what you need.

synctoy is just old now( 2009), and support/updates ended long ago. Not the sort of thing for reliable backups
synctoy BY DEFINITION , is not a backup. Its a sync . Totally different animals

Copy & paste is not a reliable backup method either :-)
Ive used robocopy for this sort of thing , but you need to be carefull with the switches, logs & not have anything open you want backed up.
Also want to have 2 or 3 versions/copies of the backups (eg Monbackup, Wedbackup, Fri etc)

Unless you know what youre doing , perhaps just use Win7's built in backup , the image option is very good.

In general, Dont backup to a single USB stick (USB hd's much better than USB stick)
dont leave the backup device connected when not backing up

you want something that can create multiple copies/versions of backups ; else if a file is corrupted, the good file on the backup will just get
overwritten with the bad version
