I need an extra SATA port for my XP machine. So far have tried 3 cards which look OK in Device Manager but with a HDD connected Windows will not boot up (in normal or Safe Mode)

In Device Manager under SCSI AND RAID Controllers all 3 cards come up as VIA Raid Controller 3249. But I don't think that's right as the chipset is VIA 6421A.

If I try and update the driver via the wizard it always fails. I can't identify the actual driver file, assuming I have it.

Any help much appreciated !

Some of these cards default to raid mode and need to be configured in the card's BIOS.

Also upgrade your OS to something supported/modern.

Might surprise some, but I have no wish to upgrade my OS to a later version. I do have another machine with Win 10 machine but lot of things I use won't work with it (and it's Explorer is not a nice as XP looks ugly with many things duplicated etc...!).

I don't think you should tell others to "use a later OS" - it's their choice. (And is frankly not at all helpful)

I know this sata card has worked on XP machines in non-RAID mode, but won't now. Must be a reason... I don't recall it being called a "VIA Raid Controller 3249" and wonder if it's being incorrectly identified. Anyway I've binned it now and picked up something on TradeMe that uses the pcie slot, so fingers crossed.

Whether you like it or not, it is a perfectly valid and helpful suggestion. A more modern OS is far more likely to be supported by device manufacturers, and have working usable drivers. In the interests of not just lecturing you, what are the particular reasons that motivate you to chose using an insecure, outdated, unsupported OS? Maybe the community here can help you find alternative solutions.

That's your prerogative, but I'm really at a loss as to how you think it's not insecure, outdated or unsupported. To quote Microsoft themselves "There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 10". If you change your mind and would like help exploring ways to get around whatever is still tying you to XP, I'm happy to help.

Not everyone can afford to upgrade to Win7+ anyway, probably find thats why most of those on XP, stay on XP, especially on older machine.

From memory ...

some cheap sata cards arnt bootable . As above, you may need a RAID card , or a SATA card that has a bootable onboard bios
Also , if the mb doesnt support booting from particular addon cards you may be out of luck

Not everyone NEEDS Win10 . He may have very good reasons to keep using XP: he HAS a Win10 PC.
XP's lack of support : pfft. So many XP PC's simply werent doing Winupdates anyway , back in the day.

I still have one machine on xp for old hardware with unsigned drivers. Just too much effort getting them installed on 8.1 or 10

Did you try installing the drivers that came with the card or from the manufacturer instead of just using those that come with the OS

I tried both, driver that worked previously (but on another computer) and a could I downloaded that used the 6421A chipset.

In all cases the comp would not boot with a HDD attached. Even though it looked OK is Device Manager

Anyway, problem solved here

Just installed ad works great, didn't even need a driver ! And is hot swappable.

Thanks to all for suggestions and long live Win XP (couldn't resist that!). But I do like the Win 10 view of "This PC" with the

HDDs showing as fuel gauges.
