Google is introducing Backup for Google Drive

It is not really a "backup" in the sense that it doesn't keep versions of documents but the main difference from the old Google Drive is that it now allows you to sync any folder. Also there's an option to NOT replicate deletions - which prevents the situation where you're online and delete something to realise you don't have a backup.

I will continue to use Crashplan.

syncing any folder will be a plus. Will have to see how it handles drives not being there since on the lappy I have dropbox and drive going to a big SD card in it, and they both sulk when I pull the card out to read a card off a camera etc.

syncing any folder is the thing that the freeware sync/cloud plans really needed.

Perhaps that was left out in order to force users to upgrade to better paid versions of sync/cloud plans?

I guess the questions are , will it spit the dummy on 'locked' files (eg pst when Outlook is still open)
will it try & overwrite files on the PC : can that be disabled (ie one way sync only)

For those that refuse to pay for cloud services, it could be a good option.
Lack of multiple versions is a worry though. Too easy to get cloud syncs wiped out by crypto malware.

That'd be awesome, if I had more than 2mbs upload speed. Hopefully next week, when I get "nbn".

problem I have with it is you don't seem to be able to deselect folders underneath "My Documents".  I have a VM under there and don't want that 30gb backed up.

Surely a VM doesn't belong under "My Documents"?

Shouldn't EVERYTHING be in "My Documents"?

VMware and Parallels default to under there.  So no way to filter sub folders then that I can see...

I havent used the backup part of the update as of yet but versioning is still working as usual on the normal gdrive side - as long as you do it from their website as its always been.
