I've been asked to fix a laptop that wont shut down properly.

All the appropriate power settings in Win10 seem OK.

The owner thinks this has been an issue since upgrading from Win7 to Win10.

Using shut down through the menu just seems to put it to sleep, so then you have to hold the power button down to actually get it to turn off.

Which is fine when they remember to do it. When they dont the battery goes flat.

I cant access the BIOS as they dont know the password.

Its an HP Probook so you cant get around that as far as I know.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Assuming it wasn't changed from factory (mistake I made) the users in BIOS talk back to the OS with HP security software. (I reimaged and couldn't access bios anymore) so an administrative account should be a valid user/pass

But yes, if not. New motherboard time as they tattoo the accounts to TPM

Try shutdown /s in cmd and see what happens. Also in cmd type in powercfg –restoredefaultschemes

If you can't get the drivers or system BIOS configuration right, an alternative workaround might be to turn off the Fast Startup feature in Windows power settings (in the 'Choose what the power buttons do' section).

Turn off "fast startup" in the power settings. It can cause issues

shutdown /s worked, but I don't know what that was supposed to prove.

I have disabled Fast StartUp and that has made the problem go away.

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated.

Check the event log in that case for the last time it didn't work.

Fast shutdown appears to not unload drivers and such to make restart faster, might have one that hangs instead of suspends
