I had a look at someone's computer which the WiFi wasn't picking up SSIDs. The store or the place he got the USB WiFi from installed the stick inside the computer case with a USB cord routed in the case from a external USB port. Is this common practice?

If the case is metal, it's a pretty dumb thing to do.

It's not uncommon for desktops / aio to have integrated WiFi.

yes but they are from the motherboard and have antenna connections on the I/O board on the back

I have a wifi LED controller buried inside one of my cases between the side panel and motherboard tray and it gets signal and works.

Also a sonoff I stuck inside a metal fluro light fitting works fine too. Its not as simple as metal makes it not work, it will just make it not work as well.
