I have an HP 1510 printer/scanner.  It works perfectly on my other PC under Windows 7 64 bit connected via USB.  I have resurrected a Dell Optiplex 755 and installed Windows 7 32bit for a specific program that does not work in a 64 bit environment.  I installed the printer variously using the install CD; using the install program from the HP site; and the basic installer again from the HP web site.  I uninstalled the drivers each time.  The scanner function works OK, but it will not print.  I have tried different USB ports.  The target PC has 4Gb RAM, plenty of HDD space, an Intel core2 Duo CPU and I have updated the BIOS to A22 from the Dell website.  The printer shows in "Devices and Printers" and I can set up print options but to no avail.  I have tried various queries on Dr Google.


I have a Brother laser printer connected to this PC and it works as advertised.


I have asked this question in the Trademe community but no success.  I am hoping a guru here can help.....Please

Presumably -


1: You have uninstalled the driver, rebooted and let the O/S find the printer and install a driver as it sees fit (not off the CD or HP site)?


2: Swapped out the USB cable ... they do fail occasionally for one device but not for another.

Entirely possible the brother is the cause.


They are good for installing virtual USB/printer servers and catching everyone elses devices. But I'd expect it to work if seen in printers/devices unless it is in some sort of scan-only mode. 


Catalog still has the generic 2012 drivers. Makes you wonder what NULLPRINT indicates..

1.  Yes, but no drivers were found.


2.  I used the same cable on both PCs.




I installed the Brother last to see if it was a generic PC problem.  I will check out the link and report back.

The PCL 5 HP Universal Print driver is where it's at in my house


It is working for me with 2 totally different HP printers, spanning 15 years in age.

Oblivian - downloaded the cab file and expanded it.  Tried installing the INF files but got the message "The inf file you selected does not support this method of installation".  Tried the exe files but nothing happened.  I am obviously out of my depth here so any hand-holding accepted.


gbwelly - which of the universal print drivers should I use?  PCL5, PCL6 or Postscript?  Bear in mind the PCs are used in a personal environment, not a business or network.  All printers are hard wired.

Expand the cab,.




Device manager, select device. Update driver. Manually choose. Browse to expanded folder. Itll find the .inf




and PCL5 if you go that route for compatibility (old stuffs)

sometimes you MUST NOT connect the printer untill the install software tells you to.
Otherwise it just doesnt work properly.


I hate to say it, but given the low cost of new printers , sometimes its just not worth the effort .


uninstall all printer software: both printers.
System restore back to before you did the printer installs.
Rerun the FULL printer install software from HP, dont plug in the USB untill the install tells you to .

gbwelly - loaded PCL5, no improvement.


1101 - you are right, I can replace the printer for lass than $30

If replacing the printer , personally I would avoid HP's .
Great hardware, lousy printer software/drv . I see more drv issues with HP MFC's than all other brands combined
