My pc has never stayed asleep properly for some reason. It will go to sleep but then X minutes later will turn on again stay on for a couple of minutes and then sleep for a while

I've tried lots of different things, like making sure msn and irc were all shut down so there pop ups didn't wake it up.

I don't think a program like that could cause it to come out of sleep

Have a look in your bios settings, there are three things which can normally wake a computer - access on the lan, or a usb device requests it or mouse/keyboard movement

I would hazard a guess to say its either the wake on lan feature, or if you have a wireless mouse/optical mouse - I often find these can pickup movement when there is none

This sounds like a drive problem...

Its a dell pc on vista.

I'm a n00b when it comes to bios as have never really played with them before... so where would I want to look in there?

Well if your not familiar with the bios it might pay to narrow the problem down a bit before diving in.

Try unplugging as much of your equipment from the back of the computer, just leaving power, monitor and mouse/keyboard, then attempt to suspend.

Then also unplug your mouse and keyboard once you have succedded in doing this, and leave it for a while. There is no need to unplug your monitor.

Be careful as there is always the possibilty of a crash when coming out of sleep - especially when removing devices etc
